Manufacturing Day

Kevin J. Kelley, RTMA Executive Director

Manufacturing Day has been created by the manufacturing community to expand knowledge about, and improve public perception of, manufacturing careers and manufacturing’s value to the Greater Rochester Economy.

On October 3, the RTMA will be participating in RIT’s Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies (CIMS) grand opening of the RIT Digital Manufacturing & Product Realization (DM&PR) Lab from 1:00-2:00 pm. The event will be held on the fourth floor of the Golisano Institute for Sustainability. All RTMA Members are encouraged to attend.

The Lab is equipped with innovative technology capabilities for product design and simulation, prototype fabrication, inspection, testing, and validation. These capabilities allow a company to bring an idea to life, test it, and leverage the RIT-CIMS’ network to identify a field performance validation site.

The grand opening event will include a tour of the DM&PR Lab and equipment demonstrations, including 3d printing, 3d laser scanning, and part fabrication.

In addition to the program with RIT-CIMS, the RTMA is coordinating a plant visit with students from Monroe 2-Orleans Board of Cooperative Educational Services. Bill Pollock, President and CEO of Kingsbury, will be hosting the students at his Eastman Business Park Location. Kingsbury’s innovation in the marketplace is a complete touch screen film factory. It takes long rolls of Kodak-made specialty film, exposes it to ultraviolet light and a chemical bath, and transforms it into one of the key components of a tablet or smart phone.

Our community is fortunate to have resources to assist manufacturing, such as Rochester Institute of Technology’s Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies. However, to maintain and grow their positions in the marketplace, manufacturers require a highly competent skilled labor supply.

The students from BOCES 2-Orleans Board of Cooperative Educational Services will see an innovative, advanced technology company when they visit Kingsbury. It is intended that the experience open their minds to the possibilities that a career in advanced manufacturing provides.

While October 3 is the designated day for manufacturing, every day is manufacturing day for our members. The RTMA is here to support that effort.
